Synopsis
In 1992, the Minister of Industry and Energy, Eng. Mira Amaral, in collaboration with several business associations and companies, which financed the project, commissioned a study led by Professor Michael Porter, to apply his competitive analysis models to the Portuguese economy .
The result came in 1994, with the report “Building the Competitive Advantages of Portugal”, – commonly known as the “Porter Report” – proposing a concrete path of action to make Portugal more competitive.
Testimony: 30 years of the "Building Portugal's Competitive Advantages Report"
“It is important to analyze how the Porter model and the experience of the last 30 years can help us reflect on how to make the Portuguese economy more competitive in the face of today's economic dynamics, marked by the rapid development of new technologies.”
Luis Mira Amaral
Engineer and Economist

A contribution from the past to a vision of the future
Thanks to those who share information and knowledge, we all learn and grow together. By deciding to digitize and share the original version of the Porter Report on the internet, which was not available online, Eng. Mira Amaral continues to actively contribute to increasing the quality of the debate on the competitiveness of the Portuguese economy.
The Porter Report was notable for promoting a broad debate on the competitiveness of the Portuguese economy. 30 years later, technological and geopolitical evolution has brought many changes and future dynamics. For example, Artificial Intelligence will have a Schumpeterian effect in defining winners and losers in the world economy. It is important to debate what remains relevant and fundamental from the previously defined theses and what changes with the new competitive dynamics of today.
