Cape Verde will assume leadership of the project “African Submarine Fiber”, process carried out by General Directorate of Telecommunications and Digital Economy (DGTED), representing the Government of Cape Verde.
A SMART Africa is a bold and innovative commitment by African Heads of State and Government, with a focus on accelerating sustainable socio-economic development on the continent, introducing Africa into a knowledge economy, through easy access to broadband and the use of Information and Communication (ICT).
This alliance is constituted, now with the adhesion of Cape Verde, by 28 countries and some international organizations. Its motto “Turning Africa into a single digital market” and as main objectives to harmonize legal policies and regulatory processes; create economies of scale to generate more demand and more favorable market conditions and attract large-scale investment in ICT projects on the continent.
According to the Director General of DGTED, Engineer Aruna Handem, Cape Verde has made consistent and forward-looking bets to improve the country's development, in particular the growth of its ICT sector. These recent efforts have resulted in improved connectivity and the availability of digital services.
LBC believes that, with the right policies and partnerships, Cape Verde can assume, in the short term, as the “Singapore of Africa”.
LBC has carried out more than 50 projects in Cape Verde, including the definition of the digital strategy for the Information Society and Electronic Governance, in 2005, which laid the foundations for building the digital development of Cape Verde. Other important projects in this area were the definition of the strategy and business model of the Technological Park of Cape Verde, the introduction of Information Technologies in Education and the definition of a strategy for the development of an ICT sector.
